Another author I would highly recommend teenagers, and especially reluctant readers, (both male and female), would be Ellen Hopkins. Her writing captures their attention so intensely that they actually don’t ever want to STOP reading. It’s quite remarkable. And although they are considered to be “high interest” books, (they deal with drugs, rape, suicide, pregnancy, and prostitution), the importance in her literature is that they force students to think globally, to think beyond their own personal world, and into the world outside their immediate universe.
Check back with us soon to find out more about her novels, and the famous trilogy that has so many teens talking: Crank, Glass, and Fallout.
