A Write Teacher Review: The Absolutely True Diary of A Part-Time Indian, by Sherman Alexie

Hello Friends!

I just finished reading The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian, and I was delighted!  It’s funny, it’s heartbreaking, it brought back memories from middle school that I had COMPLETELY forgotten about!

Middle school is hard enough, but with the multitude of complications that Arnold “Junior” has, (health problems, money problems, parent problems, friend problems, sibling problems, identity problems) well, it’s amazing that he gets up out of bed everyday! Alexie takes you on the journey of what it feels like to be a fourteen year old boy growing up on a reservation with humor, quick wit, and a directness that is not found in many YA novels.  You truly feel as if you’re in the brain of a fourteen year old boy.

This is a wonderful fit for reluctant readers, especially tween boys!

“I didn’t know what to say to her. What do you say to people when they ask how it feels to lose everything? When every planet in your solar system has exploded?” ~ Sherman Alexie, The Absolutely True Diary of A Part Time Indian
