A room full of love, a lifetime of appreciation, and a lasting legacy…

Hello Friends,

As I write, my music always plays.  And it’s only fitting to have this particular song in the background right now – “You Get What You Give” – by the New Radicals…and the lyrics flood my brain, bringing a smile to my face…

…And you cannot find the light
If you feel your dream is dying
Hold tight
You’ve got the music in you
Don’t let go
You’ve got the music in you
One dance left
This world is gonna pull through
Don’t give up
You’ve got a reason to live
Can’t forget you only get what you give….

…they are fitting.  It is those moments where you preserve, those moments where you give it your all, well, those are the moments that matter. Those are the moments that help you get out of bed in the morning.

Tonight, I was at a retirement party for a man who was a theatre & English teacher for 32 years.  Some may call him an idol. Some may call him something of a theatre God.  Some may call him an inspiration. Others say he’s the best teacher they’ve ever had. The person who made their careers, their lives, the person who gave them purpose.  To them, he is mythical, magical, and a legend.

To me, he’s dad.

I grew up around the theater & around books & around education.

Shocking, huh? (I mean this entire website is founded on those principles.)

I grew up around all of that, and I went to school, to college, to graduate school…to do the exact same thing.  To be just like my dad, and it’s been phenomenal so far.

I looked around tonight, at the faces around the tables of this HUGE surprise party, and I literally was moved to tears. The outpouring of love from students, spouses of students, children of students, colleagues, friends, family…

…it was out of this world.

A mans life work was celebrated for over four hours, and it could’ve gone for forty more.  The speeches of gratitude, love, & thanks were just unbelievable.  The AMOUNT of people that chose to come was just mind blowing. (150 folks showed up!) The pictures that were resurrected just took everyone back down memory lane. Pictures that brought a smile to every face in the room. Pictures brought sunshine into every crevice in that building.

It was just magnificent.

And it was to celebrate a teacher. Yes, a teacher. An absolutely moving, inspirational, loving teacher, who has meant the world to a community and its residents.

The love was even felt in Afghanistan, where a former student, now a Military Attorney, sent her love and gratitude via letter, a letter which was read tonight.

This is what teaching is about.  Not the summers off.  Not the paycheck, (although proper compensation is always nice).  It’s about a room full of love, a lifetime of appreciation, and a legacy that will last forever.

Thank you!
